Levi (Justin Benson) is new to Los Angeles. Neighbour John (Aaron Moorhead) has been in the city for so long that he is not particularly impressed by roaming coyotes or clouds of smoke from the forest fires. They quickly become friends. As they have another smoke together and philosophise about life in Levi’s sparsely furnished flat, his ashtray suddenly begins to float mysteriously. The friends are fascinated by the mysterious event and decide to film everything and turn it into a documentary to make money. As they try to track down the supernatural, John and Levi get deeper and deeper into a dangerous maelstrom of wild conspiracy theories and strange phenomena. They are confronted with a world in which they recognise signs and symbols of an approaching end.
The acclaimed directing duo Aaron Moorhead Justin Benson have now created their own genre of intelligent and creative indie science fiction. After the occult mindfuck ‘The Endless’ and the time-travelling thriller ‘Syncronic’, the pair have also made ‘Moon Knight’ for Marvel Studios. With their visionary film ‘Something in the Dirt’, they return to their roots and not only give their fans an impressive conspiracy thriller including meta-movie mind games and a charming portrait of two lost men.
