General information

The Monstrale Festival, the only international short film festival in Saxony-Anhalt, is a venue for special short films, especially for the first presentation of artistic works in the short film genre.

The festival offers filmmakers on an international level both a place and an occasion to interact with the audience, to open up cinematic discourses together and to enter into conversation.

In addition to the programme core and nucleus of the Monstrale, the International Competition and the Competition for Documentary Short Film (Shortdocs), the “Wild Worlds” and thus the Children’s Film Competition will also find their way back into the festival programme in 2023. After the positive experiences of the last three years, the hybrid offer of the festival has been maintained and thus the audience reach extended beyond the region. The Monstrale 2023 will take place in Halle for the eleventh time. Since 2020, both in the cinema and online. With the online version, all international filmmakers who cannot physically participate in the programmes have the opportunity to become part of the festival. At the same time, it gives short film lovers throughout Germany the opportunity to access all festival programmes.

The core of the overall programme is formed by the International Competition, the Competition for Documentary Short Film (Shortdocs) and, since last year, the International Competition Children’s Film. In 5 programmes, they bring the latest productions from different countries of the world to the screen. In addition to the competitions, the festival week offers an extended range of special programmes such as an annually changing theme programme, panels and workshops.
