The award-winning films of this year's festival are:

Shortdocs Competition

first prize:

Adjusting

Director: Dejan Petrović

Documentary | Serbia | 2021 | 19:21 min

Jury Statement:

When we talked about the film afterwards, we thought the appropriate word for this film was "loving", although it seems to have a sombre atmosphere. "Adjusting" helps us to come to eye level with the animal. In breathtaking images and with an extraordinary feeling for the dogs' nature, we get close to them. And then there is a twist in the narrative. Suddenly another aspect of the film opens up: the prison, which is also the home of these dogs. This makes you want to watch the film again, which is usually a sign of a good film. And when you do, it opens up a new perspective on a difficult subject.

second prize:

Up here with the white Gods

Director: Jalal Maghout

Animadoc | Germany| 2020 | 11:44 min

Jury Statement:

When we saw the excellent film, we were speechless at the depth and gravity of the subject. How can one fathom such cruelty? The film language probably has the power to tell more than just facts and to help us really understand through feelings. "Up here with the white gods" does this perfectly in a concentrated and poetic way. It has mastered the art of poetry, which has the ability to get to the point but also create space to digress and engage with one's thoughts and feelings. How can one fathom such cruelty? third prize:

The train driver

Director: Christian Wittmoser, Zuniel Kim

Animadoc | Germany | 2021 | 05:45 min

Jury Statement:

Since we felt that both films were special in their own way and therefore incomparable, we decided to award two films.

What does the formal statement "collision with a person" actually mean? "The Train Driver" deals with this difficult subject in a touching way by alternating between images of the train and a fishing trip. He makes us think about how the protagonist would say why people make other people their executioners instead of just going into the water.

third prize:

Murmur

Director: Katharina Pichler

Documentary | Austria | 2021 | 09:34 min

Jury Statement:

A film always needs a suitable approach. For that, you have to be open-minded, curious and courageous. "Murmur" does that by choosing a reduced style without becoming one-sided.

International Competition

first prize:

Black Slide

Director: Uri Lotan

Animation | Israel | 2021 | 11:12 min

Jury Statement:

The first prize takes us on a poetic journey that touchingly reveals the closeness between joy and suffering and confronts us with our own vulnerability.

second prize:

S.O.S.

Director: Sarah Hafner

Short | France | 2021 | 11:24 min

Jury Statement:

The second prize goes to a film that, through its fantastic artistry, humour and irony, shows that selfishness can triumph over resilience even when we humans see climate catastrophe coming straight at us. Congratulations to S.O.S.!

third prize:

Back in 5 minutes

Director: Felipe Garrido Archanco

Feature | Spain | 2021 | 05:00 min

Jury Statement:

The third prize goes to a film that transcends the boundaries of the short film format by critically reconstructing a medium that is normally only shown between films - advertising.

Wild Worlds films for children

first prize:

Laika & Nemo

Director: Jan Gadermann, Sebastian Gadow

Animation | Germany| 2022 | 15:00 min

Jury Statement:

What we liked most was that the film is about friendship that can overcome all obstacles.

second prize:

Saka sy Vorona – Cat and Bird

Director: Franka Sachse

Animation | Germany| 2021 | 07:32 min

Jury Statement:

The film was like real life. Sometimes there were arguments, then reconciliation and joint activities. We also liked the way it was made out of paper and that all the sounds were also made out of paper.

third prize:

My Name is Fear

Director: Eliza Płocieniak-Alvarez

Animation | Germany | 2021 | 05:28 min

Jury Statement:

The little fear monster was very convincing, funny and reflected the feeling well.
