Synopsis:
32 children from an Israeli school class pose for a photo in 1988. When their paths part, they are full of hope for peace. In Super 8 footage from their childhood and pointed short portraits of their classmates at the time, Berlin-based filmmaker Yael Reuveny reflects on her own self-image and that of her generation.
Why is there no peace with the Palestinians? Is just one of the many questions Reuveny asks herself and her generation. She comes across uncomfortable answers that even the 3rd generation after the Shoah is still deeply marked by the social reactions to the Shoah.
The generation of Israelis that Yael Reuveny portrays in her film are not children of hope, they are children of fear, who are supposed to ensure the survival of the state of Israel through universal conscription for men and women and the largest possible families. That is the dogma they have grown up with. They are not free. Only those who are free, or who free themselves from their own dogmas, like Israeli Prime Minister Yitzchak Rabin, who was assassinated on 4 November 1995, can make peace.
